Project Overview
Hands-Free and Personalized Fitness App
FitVoice transforms how users engage with fitness by introducing hands-free voice commands for seamless navigation during workouts, reducing interruptions and enhancing focus. It uses data-driven insights to tailor workout recommendations and track progress, while also fostering meaningful connections with trainers for personalized guidance and motivation.
As the product designer, I guided the process from research to prototyping and testing, ensuring the app not only functions smoothly but also creates a more engaging and supportive fitness experience for users.
Challenge
How can we improve the workout experience by minimizing interruptions and enhancing guidance for users?
As digital fitness continues to grow, many workout apps still rely on manual navigation, disrupting the exercise flow. They also often lack real-time, personalized guidance, making it challenging for users to maintain proper form and effectively track their progress.
User Research
User Interview
I conducted five in-depth interviews with individuals aged 20-30 who have workout experience and exercise at least three times a week. Participants were asked about their fitness routines, experiences with fitness apps, and any pain points users encounter during their workout routines.
"…I hate it when I have to stop in the middle of a workout just to pause or rewind.”
- Participant 2
"sometimes I’m not even sure if I’m doing the exercises right, so I think having real-time corrections would help a lot." - Participant 5
Insights
Customization:
Users expect fitness apps to provide workout plans customized to their personal fitness goals, abilities, and the equipment they have available.
User Preferences:
Prefer interfaces that are clean and intuitive, enabling easy navigation.
Users express a strong preference for diverse, high-quality workout content that combines both cardio and strength training. They tend to like video-based instructions, finding them more engaging and easier to follow than text-based alternatives.
Pain Points:
Generic Programs: A common frustration among users is the reliance on standardized workout plans that don't adapt to their individual progress, goals, or needs, making the experience feel less personalized and effective.
Lack of Real-Time Feedback: Making it harder for users to perform exercises correctly and avoid potential injuries.
Difficult Navigation: Users have pointed out the inconvenience associated with managing tutorials during workouts.
Competitive Analysis
I analyzed FitBod, Nike Training Club (NTC), JEFIT, and FIIT to identify key features, strengths, and areas for improvement in the fitness app market. This analysis revealed opportunities such as implementing voice-command features for hands-free control, developing multilevel guidance to support users of all experience levels, and enhancing connections between users and trainers for greater accountability and personalized support.
Persona
To ensure the product meets the varied needs of users, I developed two detailed personas: Maya, a seasoned yoga instructor focused on overall wellness, and Jackson, a busy college student looking for efficient, time-saving workouts. These personas capture essential user types within our target audience, offering meaningful insights into their behaviors, motivations, and challenges.
Prototype
Low-Fi Prototype
I created initial flow concepts and explored creative solutions through the creation of lo-fi sketches, aiming to inspire potential ideas.
Onboarding
Asking for Microphone Access
The onboarding screens inform users about FitVoice's offerings and request access to the microphone.
Onboarding Questionaire
Onboarding questionnaire is designed to create personalized fitness plans for individual users. Gathering information such as their fitness level, preferred workouts, goals, desired workout frequency, and any health injuries.
“Rewind10 seconds”
Voice-based navigation
One of FitVoice’s distinctive features that sets it apart from other applications is its ability to allow users to utilize voice-based navigation during exercise. Users can simply say commands like "rewind 10 seconds," "skip 15 seconds," or "pause" to control their workout experience. This distinctive functionality not only sets FitVoice apart but also provides users with a hands-free and engaging fitness experience.
Direct Access to Expert Advice
Personalized Trainer
Users now have the opportunity to connect directly with their personal trainers, enabling them to pose questions and seek guidance on any aspect of their workout or plan. This interactive element enhances the user-trainer relationship, providing a dynamic platform for receiving personalized assistance and support.
Lost Motivation? The Numbers Have Your Back!
Data-Driven Insights
Exercise History Calendar
FitVoice delivers data-driven insights, featuring a Statistics screen with a calendar highlighting exercise history and the option to save specific activities. A motivational streak tracker encourages consistent workouts.
Calorie Burn Tracker
Users can easily visualize their progress with a table displaying calories burned per day, week, and month, along with total exercise time. This comprehensive approach not only guides users through their fitness journey but also provides the motivation and clarity needed to achieve their goals.
These steps create a safe environment where students can confidently explore events, connect with peers, and engage in campus activities. The onboarding process is designed to be quick and intuitive, ensuring a smooth start for new users.

Final Takeaways
If I had more time…
I would focus on designing the trainer interface to create a more comprehensive and user-friendly experience. Additionally, I would enhance the questionnaire by adding more detailed questions to further personalize fitness plans for each user.
What I’ve Learned…
Throughout this process, I gained key insights into user-centric design, with a strong focus on addressing user pain points. Identifying gaps in existing fitness apps, I integrated voice-based commands to create a more seamless and intuitive user experience.
This project not only strengthened my design skills but also deepened my passion for transforming innovative ideas into practical solutions. My goal is to develop a fitness app that exceeds user expectations and contributes meaningfully to their overall well-being.
